THE IMPACT OF TRAUMATIC EVENTS ON COGNITIVE PROCESSES IN ADULTS

Abstract

The article is devoted to the theoretical and empirical study of the impact of traumatic events on cognitive processes in adulthood. The purpose of the article is to highlight the results of an empirical study of the impact of traumatic events on cognitive processes in adulthood. Research methods: theoretical (theoretical and methodological analysis, generalization and interpretation of scientific data); empirical: testing; various survey options (open and standardized questionnaires). Methods of processing experimental data combined: quantitative methods (statistical data processing); qualitative methods (differentiation and generalization of material by qualitative parameters) Theoretical and methodological approaches to studying the problem of the impact of traumatic events on cognitive processes in adulthood are analyzed; based on the theoretical and methodological analysis of scientific sources, the consequences of the impact of traumatic events on cognition are clarified; empirically investigated the relationship between the level of manifestation of post-traumatic stress reactions and the level of development of such cognitive processes as: memory, thinking and attention; developed and proposed a training program on the topic «Prevention of PTSD». The results of the study of the level of development of cognitive processes (memory, attention and thinking) in adults, who were divided into two groups according to the indicator «level of manifestation of post-traumatic stress reactions», are presented. Using mathematical statistics, it was established that the differences in the results of the groups are reliable and non-random. This means that adults with a high level of post-traumatic reactions have a reduced level of functioning of such cognitive processes as «memory», «attention» and «thinking». The conducted study does not exhaust all aspects of this issue. Prospects for further study may include an in-depth analysis of the genesis of the concept of «psychotrauma» at different stages of ontogenesis, the creation of psychodiagnostic and psychocorrectional methods for studying the level of development of cognitive processes in people who have experienced or are experiencing traumatic experiences.
