CRITICAL THINKING AS A KEY SKILL OF A MODERN OPERATIONAL-LEVEL OFFICER

Abstract

The article analyzes theoretical approaches to understanding critical thinking as a key cognitive competence of an operational-level officer in the context of the transformation of the nature of armed conflict. It is determined that critical thinking is a necessary condition for the effective functioning of an officer in situations of high dynamics, multifactorial uncertainty and information overload, which are characteristic of the modern combat environment. It is found that this quality provides the ability to make rational and well-founded decisions, adapt to changes and avoid stereotypes in operational management. The main characteristics of critical thinking are considered, including logical consistency, reflexivity, justification, structure, coherence, the ability to analyze alternatives and assess the consequences of decisions. The specifics of the manifestation of critical thinking at the level of operational management are characterized, where it determines the quality of planning operations, coordination of actions of heterogeneous units, interaction with allied structures and transformation of strategic directives into specific tactical decisions. The need to develop critical thinking in the process of professional military training is substantiated. It is proven that its formation is one of the priorities of reforming military education in accordance with NATO standards. Conclusions are drawn regarding the effectiveness of the implementation of interactive teaching methods (case analysis, tactical simulations, command and staff games), which contribute to the development of critical thinking in students. The development of this competence is considered as a factor in increasing the intellectual potential of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and a strategic condition for the successful functioning of the officer corps in the conditions of modern warfare.
