Abstract

The article deals with scientific research of foreign scientists on the topic which is relevant to modern Ukrainian military psychology and psychology in special conditions – the search for additional forms and means for preserving the mental health of representatives of the security and defence sector of Ukraine. The aim: to review foreign research on the involvement of military chaplains to provide psychological assistance to military personnel and veterans of their national armies during the period of 2017-2022. Methodology: the method of theoretical analysis through its set-theoretic variety according to the implementation approaches was applied. Conclusions: several foreign studies have been analysed and they show that the involvement of military chaplains to provide psychological assistance to active-duty military personnel and veterans has a positive effect and is quite clear in maintaining their mental health. Pastoral care facilitates and helps warriors cope with the traumatic experiences, suffering, and even death of their comrades-in-arms. Spiritual assistance is an important component in the care of wounded servicemen in military medical facilities. The pastoral work of military chaplains plays an important role in overcoming the mental trauma symptoms, improving the quality of their lives, as combatants often experience numerous spiritual demands that arise in extreme conditions of their military service. Unfortunately, this positive experience still does not have proper practical application in the Ukrainian army. In Ukraine, the principles of military chaplains’ pastoral care to provide psychological assistance to military personnel are not regulated, so such work is not carried out systematically and without special training. Considering the urgency of this issue for the personnel of the Ukrainian military defense bloc, promising areas for further research are the study of the impact of the military personnel’s religiosity on their resilience and tolerance for uncertainty.
