Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine whether the perseverance and life goals of high school students have a predictive effect on academic success Method: The correlational survey method was used in the research. The study group consists of 781 students enrolled in high schools in the central districts of Erzurum province in the 2021–2022 academic year. “Personal Information Form”, “Short Grit Scale” and “Life Goals Scale” were used as data collection tools in the study. Descriptive analyses, t-test for independent samples, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed using the SPSS program to analyze the data obtained in the study. Findings: It was determined that grit differs according to gender and future plan, but does not differ according to grade level and type of high school. It has been determined that life goals also differ according to gender, grade level and future plan, but not according to the type of high school. In the applied correlation analysis, it was observed that there was a significant positive and low-level relationship between life goals, grits and academic success. In the applied mediation analysis, it was determined that life goals predict 18% of academic success through their grit. Result: In the study, it was determined that life goals differ in terms of gender, class level and future plan, and grit differs in terms of gender and future plan. In addition, it was found that there is a positive and significant relationship between life goals, grits and academic success. It has also been determined that life goals predict academic success through their grit. Therefore, it is thought that it will be useful to consider these findings in applications aimed at increasing the academic success of high school students.
