GENDER INEQUALITY IN REMUNERATION: CURRENT TRENDS

The article addresses the persistent issue of gender inequality in wage compensation, which remains a significant concern in many countries, including Ukraine. Despite efforts to address this issue, women still face a substantial wage gap compared to men for the same work. Factors such as discrimination, gender stereotypes, and biases about women’s roles in the workforce contribute to this disparity. Women are often confined to lower-paying, traditionally «female» sectors, while men dominate higher-paying, male-dominated fields. Additionally, women face barriers to career advancement and leadership positions, perpetuating the wage gap. The article explores various legislative measures aimed at addressing this inequality, such as equal pay laws, gender quotas for leadership roles, and mandatory pay disparity reporting. These measures have shown positive results in some countries by promoting transparency and forcing companies to reassess their pay structures. The article emphasizes the role of affirmative action policies in overcoming gender bias and providing women with equal access to better-paying jobs and career advancement. International examples from countries like the European Union, Iceland, and Norway are discussed. These countries have made strides in narrowing the gender wage gap through policies like paid parental leave, subsidized childcare, and state-supported programs empowering women in the workforce. For instance, Iceland requires companies to prove they pay men and women equally or face penalties, leading to significant improvements in gender equality. The article stresses the importance of addressing cultural norms and societal expectations that shape women’s career choices. It calls for a holistic approach combining legal reforms, cultural shifts, and the promotion of equal opportunities for both genders. In conclusion, the article argues that gender equality in pay is crucial not only for fairness but also for economic growth and societal development. Closing the gender wage gap contributes to a more productive, innovative workforce and a fairer, inclusive society. Addressing gender inequality in wage compensation requires coordinated efforts at all levels, including governments, businesses, and society.
