INTERTEXTUAL MODELS OF ANCIENT UKRAINIAN LITERATURE AND THEIR RECEPTION IN UKRAINIAN PROSE OF THE 20TH–21ST CENTURIES

Abstract

contemporary Ukrainian prose of the 20th–21st centuries. The starting context is the biblical, hagiographic, and rhetorical-polemical layers of ancient literature (in particular, «The Word About Law and Grace», «The Kiev- Pechersk Paterikon», Baroque sermons, and polemical prose), which are considered as a source of stable narrative, figurative, and rhetorical models. Based on the theoretical approaches of J. Kristeva, J. Genette, Y. Lotman, and Ukrainian intertextual studies, it is shown that biblical and hagiographic archetypes, Baroque rhetorical structures, and polemical strategies do not disappear in the modern era but are transformed, acquiring new semantic and functional dimensions. The works of V. Pidmohylny, Hryhorii Tiutiunyk, V. Shevchuk, O. Zabuzhko, Y. Andrukhovych, T. Prokhasko, S. Zhadan, and M. Matios, which demonstrate a wide range of functioning ancient intertexts: from latent biblical typology and modernized hagiographic structures to ironic deconstruction of Baroque rhetoric. It is shown that hagiographic models of the «righteous sufferer» and the «path of trial» are transformed into anthropological schemes for understanding extreme situations. Particular attention is paid to the receptive aspect: intertext is considered as a mechanism for forming a dual addressee, an instrument of aesthetic escapism, and a means of constructing national and historical memory. It is concluded that intertextual models of ancient Ukrainian literature in contemporary prose serve as both a marker of continuity of tradition and a resource for artistic innovation, ensuring a multi-level reader experience and opening up new opportunities for understanding historical traumas, identity crises, and spiritual quests.
