EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SELF-ESTEEM AND PSYCHOLOGICAL STATES OF INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS OF ADOLESCENT AGE

Abstract

The article deals with the study of psychosocial consequences of internal displacement of adolescents in conditions of martial law in Ukraine. The aim of the study is to empirically examine the peculiarities of self-esteem and mental states in internally displaced adolescents, as well as to identify the interrelations between these psychological characteristics. The empirical study was conducted at Zaporizhzhia Gymnasium No. 32. The total sample consisted of 30 ninth-grade students aged 14-15. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was used to diagnose self-esteem. Mental states were studied using Eysenck’s “Self-Assessment of Mental States” methodology. Data collection was carried out via Google Forms in accordance with the principles of anonymity and ethical standards for working with minors. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used for statistical data processing using the SPSS Statistics program. The study confirmed the hypothesis about the negative impact of forced displacement on the self-esteem and mental health of adolescents. Thus, in the group of internally displaced persons, a low level of self-esteem was found to predominate, with a significantly lower representation of high levels compared to the control group, indicating an inversion of the self-esteem structure between the study groups. Internally displaced adolescents are characterized by an unfavourable psycho-emotional profile with elevated levels of anxiety and frustration, which significantly exceeds the indicators of local peers. Correlation analysis established statistically significant negative relationships between self-esteem and key indicators of emotional distress, confirming the assumption that a decline in self-esteem is naturally accompanied by increased anxiety and frustration, creating the conditions for further deterioration in psychological well-being. The results of the study are of great theoretical and practical importance for the scientific substantiation of the psychosocial consequences of internal displacement, as well as for determining ways to provide psychological assistance to internally displaced adolescents, which is, in particular, the prospective direction of our future research.
