Important aspects in the study of the gender movement in Ukraine are the analysis of printed materials of women’s publications that shaped public opinion on the topic of the women’s issue in the 19th century. Therefore, it is worth studying the work of the first women’s magazines in Eastern Galicia by Severyn Shekhovich «Lada» (1853) and «Rusalka» (1868) in order to trace the evolution of views on the women’s issue and the role of women in the society of that time. Methods: The article uses special methods: reproductive, problem-chronological, comparative- historical and retrospective. The work is based on the use of the following principles: scientificity, objectivity, historicism, systematicity and complexity.Scientific novelty and originality of the study. Press historians often study women’s periodicals in the context of general political periodicals, without isolating them into a separate group of publications. Instead, women’s periodicals are considered as part of the periodicals of Western Ukrainian lands. Detailed research of women’s publications and analysis of the development of foreign, in particular Polish women’s periodicals, which were published in parallel with Ukrainian ones during this period and were distributed in Eastern Galicia, gives certainty that this is a separate group of publications that had its own characteristics, periodization and developed according to pan-European feminist influences and trends.Main results of the study. The article reveals the theme of the image and role of women in a patriarchal society using the example of an analysis of articles from the first women’s publications by Severyn Šehovych of the second half of the 19th century, which were published in Eastern Galicia. The women’s question, equality, political activity of women, the women’s movement – these and other ideas that came to the traditional Galician family were covered in many materials of Severyn Šehovych’s first women’s magazines «Lada» and «Rusalka».The feminist influences that these publications underwent reformed stereotypes about the role of women in life, family, and state.
