METHODS AND TECHNICS OF TRANSLATING UKRAINIAN AND ENGLISH POLITICAL SLANG INTO THE CRIMEAN TATAR LANGUAGE

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of translating English- and Ukrainian-language political slang into the Crimean Tatar language in the context of the active development of media communication. The relevance of the study is обусловлена the intensive spread of English-language slang, which creates the need for its translation and adaptation into Crimean Tatar. The paper emphasizes the endangered status of the Crimean Tatar language and the lack of a stable linguistic environment. These factors hinder the development of informal vocabulary and complicate the translation of contemporary political media texts. The study outlines the terms “slang” and “political slang,” analyzes their modern definitions, and introduces the related term “slang term,” which is understood as a hybrid linguistic unit combining the precision and domain specificity of a term with the expressiveness of slang. The stylistic and functional features of political slang are examined as a means of simplifying complex concepts for a general audience and shaping evaluative characteristics. The research is based on the translation of political slang units used by Ukrainian, American, and British politicians, as well as on the analysis of the methods and strategies employed to render this group of vocabulary into Crimean Tatar. The main translation strategies identified in the article include calquing (in particular transcription and transliteration), descriptive translation, and the use of functional equivalents. It is demonstrated that the choice of strategy depends on the pragmatic purpose of the text: media-oriented political texts allow for greater interpretative freedom, whereas interstate communication requires precision and unambiguity. The study notes that the translation of political slang into Crimean Tatar is complicated by the lack of specialized dictionaries and established equivalents, which necessitates a creative approach on the part of the translator. It is proven that translating slang into Crimean Tatar can enrich its vocabulary with neologisms, which in turn will stimulate the development of its own slang layer and contribute to the standardization of translating certain slang units.
