THE INFLUENCE OF THE CHILD’S BIRTH ORDER ON THE LEVEL OF HIS INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT

Abstract. The topicality of the topic is due to the importance of studying the factors affecting the cognitive development of the child for the theory and practice of medical psychology. Formulation of the purpose of the research. The goal is to study the specifics of the relationship between birth order and a child’s intelligence. The scientific novelty of the study consists in a medical and psychological approach to the study of the problem of cognitive development of siblings and the application of psychodiagnostic methods in the research process, which objectifies the scientific justification of this issue. The practical significance of the obtained results is argued by the possibility of their use in pedagogy, child and family therapy, as well as in the educational process of students of medical, psychological and pedagogical specialties. Analysis of recent research and publications. Publications of the results of research conducted by many scientists from the end of the 19th century to the present show that the intellectual abilities of children decrease depending on the order of their birth in the family. Research materials and methods. The study was carried out within the framework of the National Development Program of the Department of Medical Psychology of the Institute of Medical Sciences PrJSC “Interregional Academy of Personnel Management” “Medical-psychological aspects of the educational process”. 30 students, whose families had from 2 to 4 children, took part in the study. Psychodiagnostic methods of intelligence research were used: “Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices Test”, “Kettell’s Culture-Independent Intelligence Test”, “Eysenck Intelligence Quotient Test No. 1”. Research results. It was established that only respondents of birth order 1 have high intelligence indicators, while only respondents of birth order 3 have below average intelligence indicators. Conclusions and prospects for further research. A direct correlation between the order of birth and the level of the intelligence index was revealed. Data from sources of scientific literature on the existence of a dependence of the level of intellectual development of a person on the order of his birth in the family have been confirmed. It is planned to continue this research on a larger sample of respondents, as well as taking into account age and gender factors.
